چکیده

S hallow boundary layer clouds are ubiquitous over many parts of the globe and strongly influence Earth’s radiative energy balance (Hartmann et al. 1992). However, our understanding of these clouds is insufficient to solve pressing scientific problems. Cloud feedback represents the largest uncertainty among all climate feedbacks in general circulation models (GCMs), and subtropical boundary layer clouds are the dominant contributor to this uncertainty (Bony and Dufresne 2005; Williams and Tselioudis 2007; IPCC 2007). Shallow cumulus convection over land is affected by land surface heterogeneity (e.g., Weaver and Avissar 2001) and is typically stronger and more time varying than over ocean (Brown et al. 2002). It regulates the surface radiation budget and contributes to the RACORO EXTENDED-TERM AIRCRAFT OBSERVATIONS OF BOUNDARY LAYER CLOUDS

RACORO continental boundary layer cloud investigations: 3. Separation of parameterization biases single-column model CAM5 simulations of shallow cumulus

Climatically important low-level clouds are commonly misrepresented in climate models. The FAst-physics System TEstbed and Research (FASTER) Project has constructed case studies from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research Facility’s Southern Great Plain site during the RACORO aircraft campaign to facilitate research on model representation of boundary-layer clouds. This paper fo...

Empirical relationship between entrainment rate and microphysics in cumulus clouds

[1] The relationships between fractional entrainment rate and key microphysical quantities (e.g., liquid water content, droplet number concentration, volume mean radius, and standard deviation of cloud droplet size distributions) in shallow cumuli are empirically examined using in situ aircraft observations from the Routine Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Aerial Facility Clouds with Low Optic...

Interactive comment on “Aircraft measurements of microphysical properties of subvisible cirrus in the tropical tropopause layer” by R. P. Lawson

This paper describes observations of subvisible cirrus (SVC) clouds with the NASA WB-57F aircraft during the Costa Rica Aura Validation Experiment (CR-AVE) in 2006. SVC clouds were encountered and characterised with state-of-the-art optical array imageing probes in extended areas of the tropical tropopause layer with temperatures as low as −90◦C. Nearly spherical crystal shapes were measured fo...

بررسی شرایط هواشناختی یخ‌زدگی هواپیما در دو بررسی موردی (فرودگاه مهرآباد-تهران)

Ice can form on aircraft surface at 0° C or colder temperatures when liquid water is present. This can happen both on the ground and at the flight levels of the aircraft. Aircraft icing has not only an impact on flight safety but has also an economic impact. According to the report of research department of the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), from 1982 to 2001, 13% of accidents due to ai...

Aircraft Microphysical and Surface-Based Radar Observations of Summertime Arctic Clouds

Updated analyses of in situ microphysical properties of three Arctic cloud systems sampled by aircraft in July 1998 during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA)/First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) Regional Experiment–Arctic Clouds Experiment (FIRE–ACE) are examined in detail and compared with surface-based millimeter Doppler radar. A fourth case is give...
